What this policy covers
This policy explains what information Mushroom Identifier collects, how it is used, and your rights in relation to it. We have written it to be as clear and straightforward as possible.
What we collect and why
Photos you submit for identification
When you photograph or upload an image for identification, that image is sent to our backend service for processing. The image is analysed by an AI model to identify the mushroom and generate the result you see on screen.
We do not store your photos. Images are processed in real time and discarded immediately after the result is generated. They are never saved to our servers, associated with your identity, or used for any other purpose.
Community sightings
If you choose to share a result to the Community Sightings feed, the mushroom photo and identification details are stored and displayed publicly within the app. This is entirely optional and opt-in.
Community sightings are posted anonymously. We assign you a randomly generated identifier — no name, email address, or personal detail is ever attached to a sighting. You can remove your sighting at any time from the results screen.
Crash and error reports
If the app crashes or encounters an error, basic diagnostic information is sent to our crash reporting service. This includes the type of error, which part of the app it occurred in, and your device model and operating system version. No personal data or images are included in these reports.
This data is used solely to identify and fix bugs, and to improve the stability of the app.
Advertising
Mushroom Identifier is ad-supported. Ads are served by Google AdMob. Before showing personalised ads, the app will ask for your consent in line with UK GDPR requirements. You may decline, in which case non-personalised ads will be shown instead.
Google may collect certain technical identifiers in connection with ad delivery. You can review Google's privacy practices at policies.google.com/privacy.
Your consent choice can be reset at any time from the app settings.
Identification history
Your past identifications are stored locally on your device only. This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us. You can clear your history at any time from within the app.
What we do not collect
We do not collect:
- Your name, email address, or any contact details
- Your location or GPS data
- Any information about other apps on your device
- Payment information
No account or registration is required to use Mushroom Identifier.
Third-party services
To operate the app, we use a small number of trusted third-party services. Each processes data only as necessary to perform its function.
| Service | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Google Gemini AI | Processes submitted images to identify mushrooms |
| Google AdMob | Serves advertisements |
| Firebase (Google) | Stores community sightings and images |
| Sentry | Receives crash and error reports |
| iNaturalist | Provides species data for the Species Guide |
Some data may be processed on servers outside the UK. Where this occurs, appropriate safeguards are in place in accordance with UK GDPR requirements.
Legal basis for processing
We process personal data under the following legal bases:
- Legitimate interests — crash reporting and app stability
- Consent — personalised advertising (you are asked before any personalised ads are shown)
- Consent — community sightings (you actively choose to share)
How long we keep data
| Data | Retention |
|---|---|
| Submitted photos | Not retained — deleted immediately after processing |
| Community sightings | Until you remove them, or we close the service |
| Crash reports | Short-term retention for debugging purposes |
| Ad consent record | Stored on your device; reset whenever you choose |
| Local identification history | Stored on your device until you delete it |
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Object to processing based on legitimate interests
- Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at info@appositelabs.co.uk. We will respond within 30 days.
Children
Mushroom Identifier is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children. If you believe a child has submitted data through the app, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
